"Another wonderful advantage of this love affair with perfume is you don't have to be faithful to just one, even if you adore each other to death. In perfume, you can cheat very discreetly over and over again, by taking up with another lover, or two, three, four, ten -- a whole string of beloveds if you like!" - John Oakes

Chopard Wish

Created by Chopard in 1997, Wish is a elegant, sweet, oriental fragrance. This feminine scent contains a blend of woodsy and spicy florals, with notes of pear, blackcurrant, Chinese gooseberry, patchouli, incense, sandalwood, toffee, and amber. Elegant and exotic!

I'm going to first say that I don't personally like this. I know people who do, and with all things, I always encourage individual experimentation because there's no accounting for taste (including mine) and what smells icky on me may smell heavenly on someone else (and vice versa).

The opening notes of this are very, very sweet, almost sticky sweet. I heard one person say they smelled like "cough syrup". I experienced them more as berries in strong, sweet syrup. When the top notes faded, they developed into the more floral (and less fruity) but still sweet middle notes. At this point, I would have liked and expected something spicy (cloves? cinnamon?), but there was nothing of the sort, unfortunately. In fact, during the middle phase, I caught distinct whiffs of something that smelled very like fairy floss (cotton candy) or some other sort of very sugary candy.

The base notes were, again, sweet, which I found disappointing. There is suppoed to be an incense note in the base, and that might have added some non-sweetness, but I found that the incense note was very faint and that while it's there, it's overpowered by the sweet notes (at least, this is the case on me).

I'm glad that I didn't buy this fragrance in a bigger bottle. I got it as part of a collection of "mini" perfumes, which is a nice way to try new things (I've sung the praises of "minis" before, I'm sure). I've found some great fragrances this way. Unfortunately, Wish is not one that I would consider buying in larger quantities under any circumstances (and now I need to find some way to get rid of this 5ml bottle of Wish EDP I have, because I'll certainly never wear it again!).

If you like sweet, semi-oriental or oriental fragrances, you might well like this one. And, on you, it may not be as sickly sweet as it is on my skin, and some of the florals and the smoky incesnse notes might be more apparent, so if you're interested, do give it a try some time. Plenty of people do like this one. I'm just not one of them.
